Punjab govt to opposes lifting ban on public transport

F.P. Report

LAHORE: As the country continues to grapple with the novel coronavirus pandemic, Punjab government on Wednesday opposed the idea of lifting ban on public transport and will propose to open small and big businesses with SOPs in the National Coordination Committee (NCC) for a limited time.

A meeting of the National Coordination Committee with Prime Minister Imran Khan in chair will be held today where all the provinces will give their recommendations regarding the lockdown after May 9, while recommendations regarding educational institutions will also be reviewed in the meeting.

Sources said that the Punjab government is in favor of not lifting ban on public transport and will propose that inter-city public transport be kept closed for now.

The provincial government also has reservations about train service. The government is of the view that train service and intercity transport would be dangerous in the current situation.

The Punjab government intends to open the markets zone wise, during specific days and at specific times. This proposal will be put before the NCC.

The markets that would be allowed to open will have working hours from 9 am to 5 pm.

The market’s president and organization will be responsible for enforcing government terms and SOPs, while strict lockdown policy will be adopted in areas with higher number of cases.
