Residents, clerics condemn attacks on electricity towers

KABUL: Kabul residents and religious scholars strongly condemned the targeting of electricity pylons in the country.

“The people who are destroying electricity pylons are in fact working for other countries and want to dominate others,” said Zalmay Afghanyar, a resident of Kabul city.

“The people who destroy power pylons are very bad people because a lack of electricity hurts the public,” said Hamraz, another resident of Kabul city.

“They spread fear and terror. Police should kill them so they become a lesson for others, “ said Abdul Wakil Shaista, a religious scholar.

Afghanistan’s national power company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), said that four electricity pylons were targeted by unknown gunmen over the past 40 days.

According to the DABS, eight employees of the company were wounded in the attacks, and the Parwan electricity operations deputy head Sayed Murtaza was killed.

Based on DABSs numbers, the restoration of the pylons will require millions of afghanis.

“They (culprits who destroyed the pylons) feel happiness and foresee satisfaction in destroying (the pylons) while these assets are national assets, they are public assets, and no one has the right to exploit public assets for their personal motives and political objectives,” said Wahidullah Tawhidi, the DABS spokesman.

Meanwhile, the family of members of Sayed Murtaza, the deputy head of DABS for Parwan province who lost his life following a blast near the pylon in the area on Saturday, have called on the Afghan government to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators involved.

The Ministry of Interior, however, said that it has nabbed at least seven suspects in connection with the destruction of the pylons.

According to the Interior Ministry spokesman, the suspects involved in the destruction of the pylons apparently had links with the armed opponents. (TOLOnews)
