Rising extremism in French society

Written by The Frontier Post

French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face on Tuesday during an appearance in southeast France. The incident took place in the small town of Tain-l’ Hermitage, President Macron visited a high school where students were being trained to work in hotels and restaurants. During a public gathering, while Macron approached a crowd of people to shake the hand of an individual in front, the man slaps him in the face causing Macron’s security to pull the president back and rush to clutch the man.

According to reports, Macron’s visit was a part of Macron initiative “tour de France” which means feel the pulse of the country. As reported, there is a wave of such extremist behavior in French society and several politicians and elected state officials have faced such violence, harassment, and death threats during the past years. While addressing to French National Assembly French Prime Minister Jean Castex said that through the head of state, democracy has been targeted. He added Democracy is about debate, dialogue, confrontation of ideas, expression of legitimate disagreements, of course, but in no case, it can be violence, verbal assault, and even less physical assault.

The extremist sentiments and violent behavior is not a new phenomenon in French society. The French Politicians had played a heinous role in fueling this curse in their society. The Muslims community and other ethnic minorities remained targets of this social crime, but then French Political and religious elite termed this unlawful behaviour as freedom of expression and turned a blind eye toward this tragic reality. Now the flames of hatred and intolerance had reached to their clothes therefore French Political elite had felt the gravity of the situation, but it seems to be a little late. Now this cancer has spread in whole French society and it needs a comprehensive strategy and complete support of all segments of the society. French government must revisit its law and strictly ban all those acts which ignite hate, disrespect, and violence against others. Now President Macron himself has experienced the violence of his countrymen therefore he must act to end this menace from his country which had ruined the lives of countless innocent Muslims other disadvantaged segments of French society.
