Rising poultry price

Rising poultry price

The price of live checks has gone up to Rs. 190 per kilogram and the dealers have predicted further rise to Rs. 200 plus when weddings season will start. They blame the upward movement in poultry price on decline in supply from Punjab. But like the smuggling of other livestock poultry products are also illegally transported to Afghanistan through unmanned and unfrequented border points. Normally, the price of chicken comes down days before Eidul Azha but it did not happen this year.

Another eatable item is beef the price which has been raised by Rs. 50 to Rs.100 hundred by the butchers and sellers at big stores. The ordinary shops sell meat for Rs. 500 hundred a kilogram and the stores charge Rs. 600 for the same quantity. The price control system is also not functional for the sale of these items of daily consumption and the sellers are fleecing the people with abnormally high prices.

Promotion of enterprises of livestock and poultry farming fall within the domain of provincial government as a part of agriculture development. But neither the previous governments nor the present one has given importance to initiating these economic activities to ensure the availability of meat and poultry products at reasonable price like the government of Punjab province.
