BUENOS AIRES, February 7, 2025 – A river near the Argentinian capital was stained deep red on Thursday, sparking fear among residents of Sarandí over yet another suspected industrial pollution incident.
Locals described a “nauseating” stench coming from the Sarandí river, which runs through Avellaneda, about 9.6 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. Many suspect a nearby tannery as the source of the contamination.
“The river looks like a bloody stream,” said María Ducomls, 52, a local resident. “We’ve seen it turn blue, green, pink, and purple before, but no one ever explains why.”
Authorities confirmed they are investigating the leak, with environmental inspectors collecting water samples to determine the nature of the dye.
By late afternoon, the river’s color had begun to fade, but the foul odor remained, adding to long-standing grievances about industrial pollution in the area.
