KARACHI: Former provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and other accused persons have been presented before an accountability court in Karachi in a case relating to Rs6 billion embezzlement.

The accountability court conducted the hearing of Rs6 billion corruption reference against the former provincial minister belonging to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sharjeel Inam Memon and other accused over alleged involvement in award of government advertisements at ‘exorbitant rates’ by abusing his powers.

During the hearing, Defence lawyers have completed cross-examination of the witness, Mir Alam Jokhio, presented by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

After completion of the cross-examination, the court summoned more witnesses in the next hearing.

Later, the hearing was adjourned till April 3.

On March 26, former Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon had once again approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday seeking his release on bail.

The high court had issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor and others for April 9. The court has directed both the parties to submit a written reply.

Sharjeel Memon, along with 11 other accused had been indicted in a graft case pertaining to corruption of Rs 5.76 billion in the Sindh Information Department on February 15 last year.

The former minister had been arrested by a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team on October 23 after the Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected his bail plea.
