Russia’s FM says Kashmir problem is matter of direct India-Pakistan talks

MOSCOW: The Kashmir problem is a matter of direct talks between India and Pakistan and Russia doesn’t support the initiative to discuss it within the United Nations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

“We have always insisted that the Kashmir problem be resolved through direct talks between India and Pakistan in correspondence with the declarations and agreements these countries have signed,” he said at a news conference on the results of Russia’s diplomacy in 2019.

“This is our position when anyone suggests the Kashmir problem be discussed within United Nations bodies.”

By denying a number of nations the right to attend official events at the United Nations, Washington has abused its privileges as a UN headquarters host nation,  Lavrov said.

“Washington has resorted to out rightly abusing its privileges as a UN headquarters host nation,” Lavrov said during a press conference on summing up the results of Russian diplomacy in 2019.

“On their own volition, in violation of international law, it denies UN platform participation to representatives of nations it deems undesirable.”

Lavrov further said, Moscow aims to use the potential of international organizations such as the United Nations and the G20 to avoid an arms race.

“This year, we plan to work on maintaining global security and strategic stability, which includes efforts aimed to avoid an arms race in space and the impermissibility of weaponizing cyberspace,” he said.

According to Lavrov, Moscow will use the full potential of the UN, the G20, the CIS, the EAEU, as well as “the potential of BRICS and SCO chairmanships.” “We will pay special attention to the efforts of five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council,” the acting minister stressed.

Russia will take all efforts to ensure that the world is not left without any arms control treaties, according to Lavrov.

“We will be firmly striving to ensure that the world is not left without any accords that at least somehow restrain and control armaments, especially nuclear weapons,” he said. (TASS)
