Schools, university canteens fined for poor cleanliness

PESHAWAR: At least three private Schools and a University canteen has been charged rupees one lac fifty thousand collectively over unhygienic and poor food safety standards in their cafeterias and premises.

The designated teams of KP Food authority on Wednesday deployed in various divisional districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in compliance with many objections and information received via social media.

While taking strict actions against schools violating food safety and hygiene standards Assistant Director Peshawar, Aneela Mahboob charged Peshawar Public School Rs 40000 over selling substandard, unlabeled, uncovered and unhygienic food products, injurious to health of students, in cafeteria.

She also served dozens of improvement notices to the schools and shops situated at Warsak Raod Peshawar.

She also maintained that Sarhad University of Science and Technology canteen has also been find full of dirt and unhygienic, resultantly the canteen owner was charged rupees twenty-five thousand.

Similarly, Assistant Director Saira Nisar charged St. Francis High School Hayatabad 60,000 over unhygienic condition of drinking water and cafeteria.

She said that the students the said school were at the mercy of God as no administrative measures have been taken for improvement so far.

While visiting Hayatabad, Assistant Director Saira Nisar also took action against City School junior campus situated at Phase III over violating food safety standards and unhygienic water supply.

She told that her team imposed fine of Rs 30,000 over absence of proper mechanism of clean drinking water. “We cannot allow school children to drink tape water which causes many diseases if not filtered properly” she lamented.

Another team comprising of two Assistant Directors Asad Ali and Muhammad Abbas checked Agriculture University Peshawar Girls and boy’s canteens respectively.

According to them they served improvement notices to both owners. Muhammad Abbas told that their team received some information via social media, complaining that objections they visited the varsity and warned the canteen owners to improve their safety and cleanliness situation otherwise legal action would be taken against them.

KP Food authority Bannu Office while maintaining food safety standards also took action against a bakery shop over keeping expired items and issued improvement notices to a dozen of shops against set food safety standards.

Similarly, Dera Ismail Khan team visited different Schools and Colleges regarding awareness of banning carbonated, soft and energy drinks and low-quality snacks.
