Seasonal influenza: Death toll rises to 35 in South Punjab

MULTAN: Spokesman for the Multan Health Department has said that as many as thirty-five people have been died of seasonal influenza in the past one month in Multan, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur.

While talking to private news channel he said that 106 patients of confirmed seasonal influenza have been brought to Nishtar hospital in the past one month and 24 out of them have died and all the patients were from Multan.

He added that ten more patients are under treatment in the hospital for or on the suspicion of suffering from the disease.

However the death toll from the epidemic climbed to 35 as it claimed yet another life in Rahim Yar Khan’s Hospital and still six patients are under treatment in the district.

Similarly, in Bahawalpur, five women and a man has died of the disease in the past one month. Five more people are under treatment.

Seasonal influenza can spread through contact with the bacteria discharged by an infected person’s coughing and sneezing. Pregnant women, senior citizens, and children are at higher risk of contracting the disease.
