Security forces intervene as Afghan MPs clash over the election of new House Speaker

KABUL (Khaama Press): A clash broke out between the Afghan MPs ahead of Sunday’s general session of the Lower House of Parliament, Wolesi Jirga, forcing the security personnel to intervene and prevent further outbreak of violence among the supporters and opponents of Mir Rahman Rahmani who was declared as House Speaker following a voting session on Saturday.

The clash apparently broke out ahead of the general session of the parliament which was organized in the absence of media.

However, several footages, apparently taken by some lawmakers are being circulated in social media which shows a tense situation inside the parliament.

In one of the part of the video, a lawmaker is seen rushing towards the seat of the speaker with an aim to assault an unspecified individual but the security forces and some other MPs intervene and stop him.

The video has sparked an uproar among the social media users who condemn the clashing MPs for their acts.

The acting Lower House Speaker Ata Mohamamd Dehqanyar on Saturday declared Mir Rahman Rahmani as elected House Speaker following a voting session.

Rahmani had earlier received 123 votes during the voting session against the 55 votes which were cast in favor of Kamal Nasir Osoli.

Both the candidates were unable to receive the required 124 votes during the voting session.

Certain lawmakers in the Lower House have said that they have reservations regarding the decision to elect Rahmani as House speaker and had warned to close the gate of the parliament.
