Security forces lose control over multiple areas, checkpoints in Baghlan
KUNDUZ: The security forces lost control over multiple areas and checkpoints as a result of clashes with Taliban in Markazi Baghlan district in Baghlan province, officials said on Sunday.
Fierce gunfight is underway in some parts of Markazi Baghlan district over the past few days. The Taliban captured a military base and multiple checkpoints in Mangalano area. The security forces suffered heavy casualties in the clashes. Similarly, Taliban seized multiple weapons and vehicles besides bringing several areas under their control.
A local resident, Habibullah told AIP that Taliban had captured Mangalano area after fierce gunfight with security forces. Similarly, the security forces abandoned Qaisar Khel, Kog Chinar and Arabano areas. Resultantly, the Taliban took control over these areas. Both the sides suffered heavy casualties in the clashes, he said. Some security personnel were found missing after the gunfight, he added.
Meanwhile, a security official in Markazi Baghlan district told AIP that 16 security personnel, including Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and police personnel were killed and 10 more wounded in the clashes.
Some security personnel went missing after the clashes, he said. He added that they would have been killed, captured by the enemy or taken shelter in the nearby villages. The security forces were trying to search them. Information about their life and death is not available at the moment.
He accused the Baghlan security officials of not providing timely assistance to the security forces in the area.
Meanwhile, spokesman for Afghan National Army 209 Shaheen military corps Muhammad Hanif Razaee told AIP that Taliban had captured Mangalano area. Issues had increased in Markazi Baghlan district, he added.
He did not provide accurate information about casualties. He, however, added that they had been given conflicting information about casualties in the clashes.
According to Razaee, commando troops were airdropped in the area early Sunday. Gunfight was still in progress in Kog Chinar area, he added. He said the Taliban had captured a military base and two checkpoints in Razaee area in the limits of Markazi Baghlan district.
However, a member of Baghlan provincial assembly Asadullah Shehbaz said that 20 security personnel were killed in Markazi Baghlan district. The Taliban had captured 13 security checkpoints and a military base in the area, he added.
Meanwhile Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AIP that their fighters captured a military base and multiple checkpoints in Mangalano area. Sixty security personnel were killed in the clashes, he claimed.
The Taliban seized multiple weapons and other war gadgets, he added. He, however, did not provide information about casualties to Taliban.
