Serbia Mulls Compulsory Military Draft Amid Regional Tensions

SERBIA: Serbia is contemplating the reinstatement of compulsory military service, President Aleksandar Vucic revealed, citing regional tensions in the Balkans and Europe. The draft, suspended in 2011 to professionalize the armed forces, may return pending approval from the national parliament, where Vucic’s allies hold sway.

While Vucic emphasized the necessity of a robust military for national security, critics question the rationale amid Serbia’s geographic proximity to NATO nations. Additionally, concerns loom over the financial burden of an expanded military apparatus.

The Balkans, scarred by past conflicts, remain a focal point of geopolitical tensions. Serbia’s ties with Russia and its stance on Kosovo independence add layers of complexity to the regional landscape, as Bosnia faces internal divisions.

As Serbia navigates its military strategy, the specter of historical conflicts and contemporary geopolitics casts a shadow over the region’s stability.
