DUBAI: For the occasion of International Museum Day (IMD) on May 18, the Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) is inviting local artists in the UAE to take part in a digital exhibition by submitting their artworks, musical pieces, poems, short films and videos corresponding to this year’s IMD theme: “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion.”

“During times of social distancing and museum closures, we continue to find ways to connect with the community virtually and engage them in our programmes as we always did when our doors were open,” said Manal Ataya, Director-General of SMA, in a press release.

Entitled “Diversity in Times of Adversity,” the online exhibition aims to bring people together to appreciate the role of arts and creativity during the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to closures of museums and cultural institutions worldwide in a bid to curb the spread of the infectious disease.

“We have always been focused on providing our audiences with access to all the SMA’s museums and programmes, something that is at the heart of the IMD’s current theme, and during these difficult times, it is very important that we continue to do so via digital means,” Ataya added.

Artists aged 16 to 25 have until May 10 to submit works that respond to the theme, along with a brief description in English or Arabic of their concept.

The entries will be reviewed by a committee from SMA and those selected will be included in the virtual show.
