Sherry urges govt to make public offices plastic free

ISLAMABAD: Underscoring the need for a mass awareness drive on plastic pollution, Senator Sherry Rehman demanded of the government to make all the public offices plastic free.

Presiding over the meeting of Senate Climate Change Caucus, Sherry Rehman expressed concerned over absence of air monitoring system in major cities. She urged the ministry of climate change to keep informing the masses about the air quality of different cities.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said that they had been talking about smog since long but in fact they did not have appropriate air monitoring system. She said that the threats of 21st century would not be linked to borders but environmental.

The senate body advised the federal and provincial environmental protection agencies to review plugging usage of oxi biodegradables as a ‘good plastic’. The meeting urged the government to stop usage of plastic bottles.

Earlier, major packaged goods sellers and retailers, under pressure to cut the flow of single-use plastic bottles and containers clogging the world’s waterways, had teamed with recycling and shipping firms on an e-commerce service that puts a twist on the old-fashioned milkman.

Called Loop and announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, on January 24, it delivers products such as orange juice, shampoo and laundry detergent in reusable glass and metal bottles to shopper doorsteps and retrieves the empties for cleaning and reuse.
