Sienna Miller delivers a dash of old Hollywood glamour at The Tony Awards

NEW YORK: Against the rainbow-striped backdrop of the Tony Awards 2019 red carpet, one star stood out for her decidedly understated look. Sienna Miller, who was invited to present a statuette, let guests like Billy Porter take the spotlight in a Celestino Couture tuxedo gown, and opted for black lace and diamonds by way of Miu Miu and Cartier.

The ankle-skimming dress with a square neckline and a crystal-embellished velvet belt bore no obvious branding (as is Miller’s way), but had the same subtle Old Hollywood glamour as the public-facing looks she has worn of late. Last week, she wore a pleated gold lamé Ralph Lauren dress with just a hint of Studio 54 about it to the LA premiere of American Woman. Prior to that, she played Julien Dossena’s Paco Rabanne muse in silver chainmail at the Met Gala 2019.

Miller has been working with US super-stylist Kate Young, who also outfits Sophie Turner and Margot Robbie, for years, but their mission – “To find the coolest dress” – has never deviated. Young knows a “Sienna look” as soon as she sees it and rarely brings back-ups. Her Met gown, for example, was love at first paillette for Miller, and took one meeting to fit the gown they believed had “real David-Bowie-Ziggy-Stardust energy”.

“We [don’t] set out to change her image,” Young told Vogue at the time. Miller’s Tony’s moment might have been what the fashion crowd expected from her, but why break a winning formula now?
