KARACHI: The Sindh Government has decided to stop recruiting of men on seats reserved for women in Sindh Police, it emerged on Wednesday.

According to a notification issued by the Sindh Government there will be no more recruitment of male officers and personnel on posts being reserved for women in order to ensure the presence of 5343 women personal and officers in Sindh Police.

The notification, reports say, has been issued in light of Sindh Service Tribunal order of 2015, which was issued on the complaint regarding non-implementation of ensuring 5 percent quota of policewomen under the Sindh Women police rules of 1998.

According to reports, a women cop had moved to the Sindh Service Tribunal, submitting that five percent women quota has been reserved in posts from grade 5 to 17 (from constable to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs) in Sindh police but the same had never been implemented.

Second, the complainant submitted, that as per rule a separate seniority list should be prepared for male and female personnel and officers but promotions are being made on a joint list due to which several women are deprived of the promotion.

The Service tribunal had directed Sindh Government to enforce the Women Service rule of 1998 in true spirit but continuous non-implementation was witnessed till recently when the provincial home department issued notification.

According to the set formula, 19 out of 380 seats of DSPs are reserved for women whereas 80 women will get posting on grade-18 for which a total of 600 officials should be posted. Of 3740 seats of sub-inspector, 187 should be given to the women whereas 347 women will be posted as Assistant Sub-Inspectors. As many as 579 and 4131 seats of Hawaldar and constables are also reserved for women.

The increase in female police officers in the province will considerably boost the dismal overall figures for policewomen in Pakistan, put at 5,731 by National Police Bureau (NPB) earlier this year.
