Sindh govt to request Musharraf’s arrest: Nasir Hussain

SUKKUR (Online): The Sindh government will request the federal government to get General (retd) Pervez Musharraf arrested by Interpol in Benazir Bhutto murder case, said Sindh Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah.

Speaking to the media at his residence in Rohri on Sunday, the provincial information minister said attempts were made to eradicate evidence after Benazir Bhutto’s martyrdom. He added they were also wary of the terrorists acquitted by the court, therefore, were discussing the matter with legal experts.

The minister maintained they would request the federal government to arrest Musharraf through Interpol. While talking about Karachi rains, Nasir Hussain said mud-slinging was not the right way to go about the issue as everyone contributes to damages. He added they will have to work together in areas affected by damaged.

However, the minister believed, many areas remained safe from damages as water only accumulated in low-lying areas. He said Pakistan Peoples Party was not only working in Punjab, but was active in Sindh under the leadership of PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

The verdict in Benazir Bhutto’s murder case was announced on August 31. In a detailed verdict, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi has held two police officials guilty of ‘criminal negligence’ and declared Musharraf a fugitive.

Five main suspects — Aitzaz Shah, Sher Zaman, Abdul Rasheed, Rafaqat Hussain and Hasnain Gul — were acquitted while two former police officials — Rawalpindi CPO Saud Aziz and SP Khuram Shahzad Haider — were each sentenced to 17 years in prison. Moreover, Musharraf was declared a proclaimed offender in the case.

Benazir Bhutto, PPP chairperson and two-time former prime minister, was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack at an election campaign rally in Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007.
