Sindh Minister Saeed Ghani tests positive for coronavirus, goes into self-isolation

KARACHI: As the number of novel coronavirus cases in Sindh has witnessed a sharp rise in the past few days, provincial education minister Saeed Ghani has fallen victim to the highly-contagious disease.

Ghani became the first prominent political leader of the country who has tested positive for COVID-19 after he announced the medical report on his official Twitter handle in a video statement.

“I underwent test for the novel coronavirus yesterday [Sunday] and surprisingly I tested positive for it [COVID-19],” he said, adding that he did not exhibit any symptoms of the contagion.

“I don’t have flu, fever cough.. and I am in good health and 100% fit,” the provincial minister said, adding that he went into self-isolation as part of the precautionary measure and fulfilling his responsibilities from home.

He also advised those who had been in contact with him during the past few days to observe themselves and undergo test if they demonstrate any symptom of the contagious disease.

“If possible quarantine yourself,” he asked his contacts to take preventive measures to stop the transmission of the disease.

The education minister also appealed to the people to strictly follow the locdown directives and do not let your family members go out to protect them from deadly disease. “…So that we can win war against this disease,” he added.

Meanwhile, sources told the private channel that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, spokesperson Murtaza Wahab and Local Body Minister Nasir Hussain Shah also underwent for coronavirus test with Ghani but they tested negative for COVID-19.

A day earlier, the Sindh government had officially imposed a “complete ban” on the public movement in a bid to effectively implement the social distancing measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

A notification in this regard was issued hours after CM Shah announced that the government was imposing a complete lockdown, terming it “only way” to stem rising COVID-19 cases as number of infected patients surpassed 350 in the province.
