KHOST (BNA): Construction has officially begun on six check dams in Khost province, with a total investment of $120,000. The dams will be built across three districts, aiming to address key environmental and water management challenges in the region.
Mustaghfar Gharibzai, the spokesperson for Khost province, told Bakhtar News Agency that the project, which falls under the Natural Resources Management initiative, is being funded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The provincial agriculture, irrigation, and livestock department is overseeing the project.
The dams are being constructed in the Sabari, Bak, and Zazi Maidan districts of Khost. Gharibzai explained that the primary goals of the project are to improve water management, prevent soil erosion, and enhance groundwater levels in the region.
The check dams, each ranging from 15 to 20 meters in length, 5 to 6 meters in height, and 4 to 5 meters in width, are expected to provide long-term and short-term benefits to local communities. Additionally, the construction phase is set to generate employment opportunities for area residents.
This project is part of a broader initiative to tackle water scarcity and environmental challenges in the region, while also promoting sustainable development and supporting local livelihoods.
