Smith Praises House Passage of Legislation to Hold Russia Accountable and Support Ukraine

F.P. Report

WASHINGTON, D.C: Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 7108, the Suspending Normal Trade Relations with Russia and Belarus Act, which would revoke permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) status for Russia and Belarus and strengthen the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

“The United States, its allies and partners, and the whole world must stand with the Ukrainian people. Congress has an important role to play in supporting Ukraine and holding Vladimir Putin accountable, and this legislation will strengthen the Biden-Harris administration’s already extensive efforts to use our sharpest economic tools. Following President Zelenskyy’s virtual address to Congress, this demonstration of support for Ukraine from the American people’s elected representatives could not come at a more crucial time.”
