South Punjab province bill tabled in National Assembly

ISLAMABAD: A legislation bill to carve out South Punjab province from Punjab on Tuesday tabled in National Assembly.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid backed the bill tabled in the lower house of the parliament.

PML-N MNA Rana Sanaullah moved the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2019 to create new province of South Punjab. Ahsan Iqbal, another member of the PML-N, while endorsing the bill said, “This is the big day for the people of South Punjab.” He also called the ruling PTI not to oppose the legislation.

Law Minister Farogh Naseem and other government members not opposed the bill, which was referred to the relevant standing committee for further consideration.

Earlier, People’s Party leader and former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that the PPP was the first political party who took the initiative for creation of the South Punjab province. Another PPP member Naveed Qamar also backed the bill.

PML-Q leader and Minister of Housing and Works Tariq Bashir Cheema supported the bill he also stressed the need for carving out Bahawalpur province in Punjab.

MQM member Iqbal Mohammad Ali while talking on the new province bill also called for creation of South Punjab, Bahawalpur, Hazara and southern Sindh provinces in the country.
