Spells of heavy rain in Lakki create problems for people

Ghulam Mursalin Marwat

LAKKI MARWAT: The two day spell of consistent rains has exposed the poor performance of Lakki municipal administration as the entire urban locality turned into a city of mud and sludge. The continuous rain which started on Tuesday and continued till late Wednesday night inundated roads and streets in Lakki city. It created craters and ditches in the busy portion of Tajazai-Darra Tang road passing through urban locality.

The rainwater accumulated in the streets and on urban roads causing inconvenience and troubles for pedestrians and motorists. It also flooded sewerage and drainage system in many parts of Lakki city. The clogged drains and accumulation of rainwater and mud on roads and in streets also exposed poor performance of tehsil municipal administration and local government institutions. After two day downpour the sanitary workers started cleaning drains on Thursday. On old kachery road where offices of tehsil nazim and tehsil municipal officer are also located, they removed dirt from sewer lines. But many residents termed the activity an eye wash and a futile exercise as cleaning of sewerage drains should have been done before the start of rain.

A group of citizens said that they were compelled to walk on accumulated water to go homes and visit bazaars. “It has become difficult for us to go from one place to other as portions of roads and streets turned into ponds due to accumulation of rainwater on them”, they maintained. They revealed that municipal staffers did not clean roads and streets nor did they lift garbage dumps from city areas regularly.

“The municipal body also lacks a proper plan to tackle with heavy rains thus roads and streets in the urban locality comes under water during downpours” a resident said. He said that municipal employees took rainwater a blessing for themselves as it took away silt and dirt from sewer lines and open drains. They asked the higher authorities concerned to launch work on uplift and beautification project without any delay as it would help raise the facelift of Lakki city and resolve sanitation, sewerage and drainage problems.
