Rao suspended, name put on ECL after Mehsud found innocent

KARACHI: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwar was suspended and replaced with Adeel Hussain Chandio as SSP Malir after a probe committee found Nasibullah Mehsud, popularly known as Naqeeb Mehsud, innocent, it emerged on Saturday.

The names of Rao Anwar and other officials were placed on Exit Control List after the inquiry committee sent their recommendations to home minister Sindh and Inspector General of Sindh on Friday night, according to official sources.

“An enquiry was entrusted to a Committee comprising of Additional IGP CTD Dr. Sanaullah Abbasi (Chairman), DIGP East Zone Sultan Ah Khowaja and DIG South Zone Azad Khan, to ascertain the facts related to the reported encounter in the jurisdiction of PS Shah Latif Town, District Malir resulting in death of one Naseemullah @ Nacieeb Mehsud”, reads the committee report, adding that the committee was of unanimous opinion that in order to ensure fair and transparent enquiry of the incident and investigation of the case, SSP Malir Rao Anwaar and SP Investigation-II East Malik Altaf Sarwar may be transferred and placed under suspension.

The Committee further recommended that SSP Malir Rao Anwar and the Police party in the reported encounter may be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL).

On the recommendation SSP Malir Rao Anwar and SP Investigation-II East Altaf Sarwar Malik were transferred from their respective places of posting and directed to report to Central Police Office (CPO).

Moreover, Letter was written to the Chief Secretary, Government of Sindh with a request to place both above-named officers under suspension as recommended by the Committee.

A letter has been written to Ministry of Interior, Government of Pakistan for placement of the names of SP Rao Anwaar and the Police party on Exit Control List (ECL) immediately as recommended by the Committee, according to IG Sindh office. .

Additional IGP Karachi has been directed to ensure that the incumbent SSP Malir and SP Investigation-II East shall finalize the investigation of the case strictly on merits in a professional manner, said the report.

Meanwhile, a police official in Malir District of Karachi told The Frontier Post that Naqeeb Mehsud was picked up when an informer of Team Rao heard him telling someone on phone that he is getting “amount” from Dubai and will start business of clothes with it.

When the team picked up Mehsud turned out be a loader who was waiting for his brother in Dubai to send him four lacks rupees for starting a small shop.

According to sources, the team picked Mehsud on January 2, and detained him till January 12 – almost for ten days – but couldn’t get a single penning from him.

On January 13, Rao Anwar claimed that he has killed four terrorists associated with Taliban, Al Qaeda and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Mehsud was one of them.

A day earlier, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took notice of alleged extra judicial murder of a young man namely Naqeeb Ullah Mehsud, hailing from South Waziristan and residing in Karachi.

“Reportedly he was aspiring to become a model. He was allegedly apprehended by Police in Karachi on 02.01.2018 and was murdered on 17.01.2018,” according to Supreme Court handout issued by registrar office here on Friday.

“Taking notice of the issue, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan has called report from IGP Sindh within 7 days,” according registrar supreme court.

Meanwhile, thousands of people from Mehsud tribe and other ethnicities took to super highway to protest against the coldblooded murder of 25 years Naqib Mehsud, who was survived by two daughters and two-year old son.

The coward remained peaceful, however, became violent when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh Chief and member national assembly Dr Arif Alvi announced to block the super highway.

Police resorted to batten charge and tear gas, which injured two. The wounded persons were rushed to hospital for treatment.
