Steps for betterment of special persons urged

TIMERGARA: Speakers at a function on the eve of international day of persons with disabilities demanded of the government to take practical steps to facilitate special persons in Pakistan. The function was arranged by the Helping Hands and Relief Development (HHRD) at Government College of commerce and management sciences Talash here on Sunday to mark the World Disability Day. Special persons including women and children, their parents and area elders attended the function.

Addressing the participants, district coordinator Pakistan Red Crescent Society Muhammad Islam, Falah e Insaniat Foundation (FIF) Timergara chief Qari Rehmatullah, Milli Muslim League district general secretary Amjad Ali, PTI woman district councilor Saira Shamsul Qamar, HHRD regional coordinator Muhammad Bilal, Al-Khidmat Foundation Lower Dir president Yaqub ur Rehman and former tehsil councilor Inayat ur Rehman said that marking of this day was aimed at motivating communities to take care of PWDs. They said neither the government nor the social welfare department had been fulfilling its responsibility regarding special persons.

The speakers said that PWDs needed extra care from families, society and state. They appreciated the efforts of the HHRD, a social welfare organization working for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Dir. They said that all concerned people should help special persons to stand on their own feet so that the society could not consider them a burden. The organization also distributed wheel chairs, books, school bags and other tools among persons with disabilities. The HHRD coordinator Bilal said his organization had registered 360 PWDs in the district. He said that the PWDs were being imparted skills and education. He said that special children were also being provided with scholarship to enable them useful citizen of the state.

The PTI woman district councilor Saira Shams, who is also included in PWDs said that mere observing the World Disable Day was not enough. She said that ground realities were totally different from what the government and rights’ organizations claimed. She demanded of the government to reserve seats for PWDs in all tiers of the government including national and provincial assemblies and senate.
