Sugarcane shortage cases: PHC issue notices to ‘Gur dealers’

PESHAWAR: The divisional bench comprising of Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Justice Qaiser Rashid and Justice Ijaz Anwar issued notices to ‘Gur dealers’ in case regarding shortage of sugarcane supply to sugar mills, on Thursday.
The counsels for sugar mills Ishaq Ali Qazi, Qazi Jawad and Ihsanullah Advocates appeared before PHC and informed that Cane Commissioner shall ensure provision of sugarcane to sugar mills and the remaining shall be used for production of jiggery under ‘Gur’ order 1948.
The counsel argued that sugar mills across Pakhtunkhwa are facing shortage of sugarcane and added that if total cultivated sugarcane will provided of the provinces shall fulfill only 38% of sugar mills demands while remaining weight will still be obtain from other provinces. The counsel argued that farmer did not providing sugarcane to sugar mills while involved in production of Gur from their crops.
The counsels argued that sugar mills are facing deficit while current situation will increase financial stress on working class of the industry.
The counsel requested PHC to direct Commissioner Cane to ensure provision of sugarcan to sugar industry and informed that ‘Gur Artiyan’ is another party which involved in business of sugarcane, so requested for issuance of notices to them. Moreover, sugarcane farmers had already made respondent in the case on request of sugar industry.
