Supreme Court to hear Sharif’s bail plea on March 19

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday fixed March 19 for hearing an appeal filed by incarcerated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif seeking bail on medical grounds.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had earlier in the day directed the SC’s registrar office to fix hearing of the bail petition next week.

A three-member bench constituted by the apex court will hear the bail petition filed by the former premier who is currently imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat jail.

It is pertinent to mention here that Nawaz Sharif had separately filed pleas seeking his bail on medical grounds, as well as its early hearing following his worsening health condition.

On March 11, A new petition had been filed by incarcerated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking early hearing of his bail plea on medical grounds.

The petition appealed the top court to fix hearing on priority basis citing worsening health condition of Nawaz Sharif. The Supreme Court was sought to fix hearing of his petition in this week, the petition stated.

It was also stated that a petition had been rejected by the top court which was filed to fix hearing on March 6.

Following the rejection of previous plea, counsel of the former premier submitted another petition for fixing early hearing on the bail request on medical grounds.

On March 4, the Supreme Court (SC) had rejected the plea filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for early hearing for his petition seeking suspension of sentence on medical grounds in Al-Azizia reference.

While rejecting the plea, the petitioner had been asked to wait for his turn until the top court fixed hearing on the petition seeking suspension of sentence on medical grounds.
