Swiss couple brutally attacked with stones in India

NEW DELHI: A Swiss tourist couple was shifted to hospital in a critically injured condition after they were attacked near Taj Mahal on Thursday.

As per the Indian media, the group Indian men approached the Swiss couple near local railway station and demanded selfies with the woman but they denied and after the groups attacked them with stones and seriously injured them.

The local media reported that the man suffered a fractured skull while his girlfriend had a broken arm and multiple bruises. The eyewitnesses recorded video of the injured when they were lying after the attack.

Amit Pathak, Senior police officer told local media in Agra that police identified some of the attackers and investigation are underway for their arrest.

The basic aim of the attack was not clear, however levels of sexual violence are relatively high in India and many Western countries warn their citizens to avoid visiting the India because risks of attacks on them.

The Swiss embassy website warns tourists of high levels of crime in India, particularly in popular tourist spots such as Agra, where the country´s most famous monument is located.

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said she had sought a report from the state government of Uttar Pradesh over the latest attack and would send representatives to visit the Swiss couple in hospital.
