Taliban announce completion of power grid project at Pul-e-Khumri dam

BAGHLAN (Amu tv): At a ceremony in the city of Pul-e-Khumri on Monday, Taliban local officials announced the completion of a power grid project at the Pul-e-Khumri dam in northern Baghlan province.

According to Taliban officials, the project cost 43 million afghanis (about $600,000) and included the construction of 8 kilometers (5 miles) of distribution lines and the installation of seven new transmission towers across Pul-e-Khumri city.

They said hundreds of families in the city now have access to electricity for the first time.

The Pul-e-Khumri Nasaji dam, built in the 1950s with assistance from the former Soviet Union, is one of Afghanistan’s earliest hydroelectric projects. It has a generating capacity of about 4.5 megawatts and remains a key source of power for Baghlan and surrounding areas.

The dam’s facilities have deteriorated over time and sustained damage during decades of war, but it continues to play an important role in supplying electricity. Northern Afghanistan also relies heavily on imported power from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
