Taliban Deputy Foreign Minister signals participation in Doha Conference

KABUL (Khaama Press): As the Doha conference nears, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the deputy of the caretaker government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has told the media that the Taliban government is thinking about joining the conference and will let everyone know its decision soon.
Stanikzai made these remarks, during a ceremony commemorating the forty-fifth anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran in Kabul. On the other hand, sources suggest that preparations for the Doha conference are nearing completion.
The two-day Doha conference, initiated by the United Nations on Afghanistan, scheduled for February 18th and 19th, will discuss major challenges facing Afghanistan with representatives from specific countries and will negotiate the selection of a new representative from the organization for Afghan affairs.
Discussions for selecting a new representative for Afghanistan affairs are ongoing, while the Taliban considers the presence of the UN Deputy Office in Kabul sufficient and deems appointing a new representative unnecessary.
Thomas Nicholson, the EU’s Special Representative, stated during his press conference in Kabul that Afghan men and women have been invited to share their experiences and perspectives at the Doha conference.
However, sources indicate that the Taliban does not accept the presence of protesting women at this conference, despite women’s participation being one of the major demands of women’s rights activists in this event.
While discussions continue for selecting a new representative for Afghanistan affairs, a final decision has not yet been announced.
