KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations has hit out at Pakistan’s invitation to Taliban to talks with Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Afghanistan has voiced its concern at Taliban negotiators’ planned visit to Pakistan in a letter to the UN Security Council, reports RFE/RL’s Radio Mashaal.
The Taliban leaders traveling to Islamabad were under UN sanctions, according to the letter, which argued Kabul should have been consulted before the meeting.
Earlier in the week, the militant movement said its representatives would meet US officials in Pakistan on February 18. They will also meet Khan on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations.
The Taliban-Pakistan meeting amounted to a violation of Afghanistan’s national sovereignty, the mission said, complaining there was no coordination with the Afghan government.
Pakistan’s invitation to the Taliban amounted to the official recognition and legitimisation of an armed group that posed a serious threat to Afghanistan’s security.
The Taliban members were sanctioned by provisions of the UN Security Council s 1988 Committee’s sanctions regime, the letter concluded.
