SHARAN: Scores of the Taliban militants have been killed and the militant group’s offensive to overrun Waza Khwa district of Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province has been repulsed, provincial police spokesman Shah Mohammad Arian said Thursday.
The Taliban fighters, according to the official, launched multi-pronged offensive late Wednesday night to overrun Waza Khwa district, but police in conjunction with army returned fire, killing 65 insurgents and wounding 35 others, forcing the insurgents to flee.
Taliban militants even failed to take their bodies, the official added.
Three police have been killed and six others injured in the crossfire, Arian said.
The security forces have been chasing the insurgents to stabilize peace and security in the restive Waza Khwa district and its vicinity, the official added.
Taliban militants have yet to make comment on the situation. (Xinhua)
