Torkham crossing closed as floods hit border area

KABUL (Amu tv): Torkham, the main border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been temporarily closed to all traffic since early Saturday, sources said.

Two sources familiar with the situation, who asked not to be named, told Amu TV the move comes after flash floods damaged the area’s mobile phone network and disrupted the computer systems required for processing transit.

“One of the officials said, ‘The computer system there is down. They’re working to fix it. Once the network is back up, it will reopen,’” one source said.

The closure follows a brief clash between Pakistani border guards and Taliban forces reported overnight on Sept. 28. According to sources, the skirmish was initiated by Taliban fighters and resulted in injuries to a Pakistani border officer before quickly subsiding. The Taliban have not issued a comment.

The Torkham crossing serves as a vital lifeline for trade and travel, connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with Nangarhar and other eastern Afghan provinces. Its closure could have immediate consequences for commerce, transit, and local communities on both sides of the border.
