Tribal districts’ industrial zones
Apex Committee of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa met on Tuesday, with Governor Shah Farman in chair. Besides reviewing the security situation in the province the committee decided to facilitate the establishment of mineral processing zones in the merged tribal districts. It merits mention that in 2003 a comprehensive plan of “Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) had been formulated for former FATA but it could not be implemented due bad law and order situation there.
The tribal districts have rich reserves of precious minerals including granite, soap stone, chromate, marble and copper for which medium scale processing plants can be set up. Currently, different types of minerals are being sold at throw away price in raw form except marble products. The processing and refinement will substantially add to their market value. Obsolete mining technology is being used for extracting mineral which results in colossal waste. The award of mining contract must include the use of modern technology for proper ministering system should be in place.
