Tribute to prof Ashfaque Ahmad Khan

Dr Tufail Muhammad Khan

Today, we bid farewell to a towering figure in the medical community, Prof. Ashfaque Ahmed Khan, who passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, innovation, commitment and compassion. Born in Pakhtunkhwa, he was not just a pediatrician but a visionary leader whose contributions transformed healthcare in Pakistan, especially in the field of Child Health.

Prof. Khan’s impact was profound and far-reaching. As the first qualified pediatrician in Pakhtunkhwa, he laid the foundation for pediatric care in the region. His tireless efforts led to the establishment of pediatric units across the province, ensuring that children had access to specialized healthcare closer to home.

Beyond clinical practice, Prof. Khan’s influence extended to academia and research. Recognizing the need for excellence in medical education, he introduced the concept of entry tests, setting a new standard for medical schools nationwide. His advocacy for child health led to the recognition of Paediatrics as a separate examination subject by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

As the Principal of Khyber Medical College Peshawar, Prof. Khan demonstrated exceptional leadership, spearheading initiatives to elevate the quality of medical education. His tenure saw the rise of a new generation of medical professionals committed to excellence and compassion.

Prof. Khan’s dedication to service extended beyond borders. As President of the Pakistan Pediatric Association and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Pediatric Association, he played a pivotal role in advancing pediatric care globally. His contributions will continue to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals.

In addition to his professional achievements, Prof. Khan was known for his philanthropy and generosity. He established Suhrab hospital for people of his native village Marghuz and adjoining areas. He quietly supported local charities and individuals in need, leaving a lasting impact on his community.

To his family, colleagues, students, and the people of KP, Prof. Ashfaque Ahmed Khan was more than a physician; he was an inspirational leader, a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light.

Though he may no longer walk among us, his legacy will endure, a testament to a life well-lived in the service of others.

May his soul rest in eternal peace at Janatul Firdaus.
