Trump assails London mayor as ‘disaster’

WASHINGTON (AA): Slamming an important leader in a U.S. ally he visited just weeks ago, U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday attacked London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan, calling him a “disaster.”

Continuing his practice of using disreputable sources, Trump retweeted a post by controversial right-wing British media personality Katie Hopkins blaming a series of casualties in the city on Khan.

“LONDON needs a new mayor ASAP. Khan is a disaster – will only get worse!” Trump wrote.

In her post, Hopkins claimed in 20 hours, two people were stabbed to death, one shot dead, and three others injured in London.

“This is Khan’s Londonistan,” she said, using the term in to defame the capital’s large Muslim population.

According to a BBC report, police have made 14 arrests in connection with the incidents.

Ahead of Trump’s state visit to Britain earlier this month, Khan, a British-born Muslim of Pakistani descent, described Trump as “just one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat” and compared the language he had used to that of the “fascists of the 20th century.”

Trump’s visit was greeted by thousands of demonstrators protesting the U.S. leader, who is broadly unpopular in most countries worldwide, besides Russia and Israel.

In retort, Trump called the Labour Party politician “a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me.”

He attacked Khan, saying he reminded him “very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of NYC, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job – only half his height,” using personal appearance as a basis to mock his rivals.

De Blasio is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination for the 2020 race.
