Trump Presses Jordan to Resettle Palestinians, King Firmly Opposes Displacement

Washington, (February 12, 2025) – U.S. President Donald Trump pressured Jordan’s King Abdullah to accept Palestinian refugees permanently, but the Jordanian leader firmly rejected the proposal.

During a meeting at the White House, Trump reiterated his plan to relocate Gaza’s residents and transform the war-torn territory into what he called the “Riviera of the Middle East.” However, King Abdullah made it clear that Jordan, along with the broader Arab world, stands firmly against any forced displacement of Palestinians.

“Rebuilding Gaza without displacing Palestinians and addressing the dire humanitarian situation should be the priority for all,” King Abdullah stated in a post on X.

Despite Jordan’s opposition, Trump insisted that both Jordan and Egypt would ultimately agree to house displaced Palestinians, emphasizing that both countries rely on U.S. economic and military aid.

Trump’s proposal has sparked widespread backlash, with 74% of Americans opposing the idea of the U.S. taking control of Gaza and displacing its residents, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. Meanwhile, the Jordanian government has emphasized its commitment to an Egyptian-led Arab plan focused on rebuilding Gaza without forcing its people to leave.
