Turkish coast guard detains 40 Afghan refugees

KABUL (Khaama Press): Turkish Coast Guard recently announced the detention of 40 Afghan refugees by coastal guards on the shores of Ayvalik city.

Turkish media reported on Thursday, April 18th that these refugees, who were on board a boat, have been transferred to the Foreigners’ Repatriation Center in Ayvalik after being detained by the Turkish coast guard.

Previously, the Turkish Coast Guard has reported the detention of Afghan citizens on the shores of the country. However, Turkish Coast Guard officials cite the lack of legal documents and illegal border crossing as the reasons for detaining these refugees.

Turkey serves as a primary route for refugees seeking to reach Europe, with individuals from various countries, including Afghanistan, paying thousands of dollars and accepting the risks of death to travel to the country.

Many Afghan refugees choose Turkey as a gateway to European countries, driven by persecution, security threats, limited job prospects, and a dire humanitarian crisis back home. Once these refugees arrive in neighboring countries, they encounter significant challenges, especially due to their lack of legal documentation.

The migration from Afghanistan is not just a matter of reaching neighboring countries but also grappling with the harsh realities and uncertainties that come with the journey.
