Two policemen injured in Karachi gun attack

KARACHI (Monitoring Desk): Two policemen were injured in Karachi’s Rizvia Society on Monday when an unknown gunman opened fire on a police mobile during a security check.

Station House Officer Rizvia Arshad Janjua said an unknown armed motorcyclist fired at a police mobile during snap checking in Jahangirabad, injuring police constables Sirajuddin and Zeeshan Safdar, according to a police statement.

The injured policemen were shifted to a private hospital for treatment. Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh A.D. Khawaja directed a senior superintendent of police to ensure the provision of the best possible medical care to the injured officers, the statement said.

The IGP also ordered police to initiate an investigation into the matter and bring the attacker to justice, and asked the deputy inspector general west to produce a detailed report following an inquiry into the attack.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet. However, recent attacks on police personnel in Karachi have been linked to a newly-formed militant outfit called the Ansar-ul-Sharia which has carried out at least three attacks on targeting police officials and an ex-army officer in this city since April this year.

Sources claim the group has been targeting retired and serving officers of the law enforcement agencies to create a ‘shock value’ as the victims appear to be a ‘soft target’.
