Two polio workers shot dead in Quetta

QUETTA: At least two female polio workers were killed after unidentified gunmen attacked the polio team on Thursday in Shalkot vicinity of provincial capital.

Police told that two lady health workers were killed in Shalkot area in a firing incident when they were doing their duty of polio vaccination.

The police reached the spot immediately and cordoned off the area and started search of the criminals.

A polio immunization drive was under way in Balochistan this week; where in more than 2.4 million children were to be administered the polio vaccine.

Polio workers are often targeted in Pakistan, which remains one of the handfuls of countries where the crippling disease is still endemic.

The total polio cases reported in the country last year was eight of which three were from Balochistan.
