KIEV (RIA Novosti): Two high-speed US Coast Guard patrol boats of the Island class departed from the United States for Odessa, the US Embassy in Kiev said on Monday.

Earlier, Ukrainian Amb-assador to Washington Ok-sana Markarova said that the US would transfer three Island-class boats to Ukraine in November.

“Two US Island-class patrol boats have sailed from Baltimore, Maryland, to Odessa. These boats are part of the more than $ 2.5 billion US security assistance that the US has provided to Ukraine since 2014. They will help strengthen Ukraine’s maritime security and operational compatibility of the naval forces of Ukraine with NATO, “the embassy said on Facebook.

Island-class boats are fast patrol boats of the United States Coast Guard designed for patrolling and search and rescue operations in coastal waters. In September 2018, two of these boats were transferred to the United States to the Ukrainian Navy. As reported by CNN, citing an official in the US Department of Defense, the boats were bought by Ukraine as part of the Excess Defense Articles program for selling unused military equipment and property to other states.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine stated that the Island-class boats would increase the combat capabilities of the country’s Navy while performing missions in the operational zones of the Azov-Black Sea region.

These boats will be handed over to the Ukrainian fleet with combat modules and American-made ship systems installed on board. According to the press service, a full-fledged division of Island-class patrol boats will be created within the Ukrainian Navy by the end of the year.
