LONDON (AA): British lawmakers in the House of Commons have been asked to go home after a water leak has caused suspension of a sitting in the main hall Thursday.
The water leak started shortly after 3 p.m. as MPs were debating new tax regulations on loans, interrupting Conservative MP Justine Greening’s speech.
The chamber was then suspended for the rest of the day. “We are aware of a water leak on the estate and we’re working urgently to resolve it,” a House of Commons spokesman said.
Labour MP Justin Madders who would speak after Greening said he hoped “I can complete my speech before rain stops play.”
“I think there is probably some kind of symbol about how many people view how broken our parliament is,” he added.
“The leak was urgently dealt with and has now been isolated,” the House of Commons press office said later on Twitter.
“The House of Commons maintenance team is currently assessing the damage,” it said. There was not any Brexit-related business scheduled in the House for Thursday afternoon.
