Ukraine Launches Recruitment Drive to Attract Young Soldiers

KYIV (Feb 11, 2025); Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has unveiled a new military recruitment campaign targeting 18- to 24-year-olds, offering a one-year contract with financial incentives, including a salary of approximately $24,000, substantial bonuses, and subsidized housing. The initiative aims to bolster Ukraine’s military ranks as the war with Russia nears its third year.

The campaign, promoted through a high-energy social media video, promises NATO-standard training and a 12-month exemption from further mobilization after the contract ends. This comes as Ukraine reduces its draft age from 27 to 25 to address manpower shortages.

While the program has garnered support from military bloggers, broader mobilization efforts remain contentious due to the prolonged deployment of existing troops. President Zelenskiy, under pressure from Western allies, has so far resisted calls to lower the draft age further.
