UNICEF announces assistance for edu sector

KABUL: The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Afghan education ministry signed an agreement worth $ 48 million here on Saturday.

According to the accord, the UNICEF would provide assistance of $ 48 million to the education ministry of Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019. Acting Education Minister Muhammad Asif Shinwari and UNICEF head in Afghanistan Adeel Khadar signed the agreement in Kabul.

Talking to reporters, the education minister said the assistance would be utilized to chalk out policies and strategies, improve standards and ensure easy access of children to expanded and standard curriculum and education. He lauded UNICEF for providing assistance to the education ministry of Afghanistan.

The UNICEF assistance would be spent on providing education to girls and providing shelter to schools running without proper buildings, he maintained. On the occasion, head of UNICEF in Afghanistan, Adeel Khadar said the UN would continue providing assistance to the education sector of Afghanistan. UNICEF was standing by the Afghan education ministry since long, she said. She hoped that the education ministry would spend the assistance effectively.
