Qatar is trying to facilitate a dialogue between the US and Iran, advocating that both sides return to the 2015 nuclear deal and reduce tensions. According to reports, Qatari Foreign Ministry is actively navigating between the two sides for facilitation of an agreed walk path. It was Oman that facilitated the secret talks between the US and Iran during 2012 and 2013 that paved the way to the nuclear deal. During recent days, Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani spoke last week with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and US envoy for Iran Rob Malley. Foreign Minster Thani met in Tehran with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss possible re-engagement with the Biden administration. He also gave Rouhani a letter from the Amir of Qatar. Apparently, it seems that Qatar is playing the same role again as it played several years back.
Being a tiny state at the world map, Qatar has dwelled in the space on the global map rightly owned for countries that have the ability to engage the world disputed parties for resolution by using their “good offices”. Presently, Doha has got importance that previously attached to few Western capitals such as Geneva, Camp David, Oslo, Ontario or Scotland. Qatar relations with the United States have been good for a long time. Earlier, Qatar was hosting the Taliban Political Office in Doha, help facilitated the United States dialogues with Taliban and ongoing intra-Afghan Peace negotiations.
Biden administration is reviewing Iran Nuclear deal since weeks had gone and the date get closer to the turning point, as Iran had informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Iran would not implement the additional protocol of nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) starting from 23 February 2021. Director General of IAEA, Rafael Grossi is scheduled to visit Iran in coming days to hold talks on future of JCPOA. So, there is a message for Biden administration to expedite its review and get the stuff out of its bag to save the window of Nuclear deal which is going to be close soon. US has not much time to exert pressure on Iran, if it did not act on the call, it may lose the over years deliberated Iran Nuclear Deal.
