US-Iran grand finale

Western diplomats revealed to the media, that the U.S. and Iran are expected to hold indirect talks in Vienna next Tuesday to break the deadlock over a potential return to the 2015 nuclear deal. As per reports, during first session, both rivals, US and Iran would not negotiate directly but European Diplomats would engage two sides separately and try to pave some common grounds for onward direct interaction or otherwise. As per information, the representatives of France, Germany, UK, Russia and China held a virtual meeting on Friday with Iran to discuss ways to return to the nuclear deal, which would require the US to lift sanctions and Iran to stop its recent nuclear breaches. In result of Friday meeting the parties agreed to hold an in-person meeting at the experts’ level in Vienna next week.

As said the US envoy would not participate in the meeting due to Iranian opposition. The European Envoys tried their best to manage direct meeting between two opposing countries, but Iran did not agree to it, whereas US was quite ready to handshake Iranian side. The Iran posed to be more aggressive on negotiating table by displaying its distrust on US administration by refusing direct engagement. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif expressed his country’s future discourse on US-Iran Nuclear deal at tweeter platform by saying “rapidly finalize sanction-lifting & nuclear measures for choreographed removal of all sanctions, followed by Iran ceasing remedial measures. No Iran-US meeting. Unnecessary.”

The verbal battle of United States and Iran which triggered after US desired to reenter JCPOA after Biden’s victory in Presidential election now entered its grand finale. Both countries are well prepared to test their wits, exploit each other weaknesses and aim to get more while giving less to the opponent. The Iranian chose not to directly engage with US and build pressure over Americans to join the Nuclear deal without addition of further clauses in the agreement whereas United States want to haunt Iranian through EU’s diplomats who are fully aware of the Iranian’s chowk points and can smartly exploit those in the US benefit.

Currently, the United States is displaying tolerance and pushing the drive in the direction of reinstatement of 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the help of European Union. The US intends to make the deal during presidency of Hassan Rouhani before the Iran’s Presidential election scheduled to be held on June 18, 2021.

Although, Hassan Rouhani government is going to elections just in two months, but Iran has no haste like America to conclude the issue under Hassan Rouhani because the original centre of power in Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Iranian media has reported unchangeable guidelines of Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei that the idea of a step-by-step removal of the sanctions or indirect negotiations with the U.S. will not be acceptable. On other hand, there is also pressure from US hawks and Israel on Biden administration for inclusion of additional protocols against Iran while returning the JCOPA.

However, at time United State is playing at weak wickets because it pulled out from the JCOPA unilaterally and went to isolation in this regard. Whereas, Iran stood fast at its position and presently playing at strong wickets. Apparently, US would rejoin the JCPOA, but likely to attach some strings in kind of Iranian trade, cooperation with IAEA, suspected nuclear sites or human rights issue in Iran.
