US stocks open on mixed note

NEW YORK (AA) : US stocks opened Tuesday on a mixed note.

The Dow Jones was up three points, or 0.01%, to 38,574 at 9.50 a.m. EDT.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, fell 10 points, or 0.2%, to 5,273. The Nasdaq lost 40 points, or 0.24%, to 16,788.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, added 3.4% to 13.56. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1.2% to 4.346%.

The dollar index rose 0.07% to 104.22, while the euro trimmed 0.3% to $1.0870 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold falling 1% to $2,326 and silver plummeting 4.1% to $29.48.

Oil prices were down around 2% with global benchmark Brent crude at $76.86 and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $72.75 per barrel.
