US strengthens its bases near Hasaqah oilfields as Iran boosts its presence in Syria

Monitoring Desk

HASAKAH: The U.S. has dispatched more trucks from Iraq to Syria to provide military and logistic support to its bases in Deir ez-Zor as Iran reinforces its foreign fighters in the region, to support Assad regime forces.

Anadolu Agency Video News captured video of the convoy of logistics reinforcements consisting of about 140 trucks headed towards the oil fields south of Hasakah governorate and Deirez-Zor.

The convoy, entered the area on Wednesday night from the Al Waleed border crossing – also known as Al-Tanf crossing – with Iraq.

Iranian general Qasem Soleimani’s slaying marked a dramatic escalation in tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which have often been at a fever pitch since President Donald Trump chose in 2018 to unilaterally withdraw Washington from nuclear pact world power struck with Tehran.

On Friday, Iran’s top security body vowed “harsh retaliation” at the “right time and right place” to the general’s killing.

After Friday’s assassination of Soleimani Iran made tactical changes in its ongoing military presence in the eastern part of the country in Deir ez-Zor province, west of the Euphrates River.

Iran-backed terrorist militias in Syria are hiding among civilians to avoid possible U.S. airstrikes, amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington following the killing of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, local sources said on Monday.

Sources told Anadolu Agency that Iran-backed militias in Syria have made major movements following Soleimani’s killing.

Meanwhile, U.S. forces in Deir ez-Zor are reported to have reinforced security measures and erected new checkpoints in the wake of Soleimani’s death. (AA)
