Water supply bills’ default

Water supply bills’ default

Water and Sanitation Services Company (WSSP) has completed the registration of illegal water connections in zone-1 of Peshawar City by registering 14,000 consumers. But out of this number of regularized consumers only two have paid the water charges bills. It shows the number of water charges bills’ defaulters is rising at alarming pace in the provincial metropolis of Peshawar. The company has requested for ensuring the payment of bills to enable it to arrange finances for providing different municipal services to the people.

The WSSP version tells one side of the story. In fact the duration of water supply to consumers has been made considerably short. Previously, drinking water supply used to be available three times a day with a total duration of 9 hours with satisfactory pressure. Now it is two times daily for four hours with low pressure. Before the formation of WSSP, TMAs and PDA used to supply water tankers, filled from government tube wells, free of cost to consumers in case of water shortages in summer. Now WSSP supply water tankers to the consumer who honestly pay water charges bills on payment whereas the tankers should have been provided free of cost to them. In the posh residential area of Hayatabad Township water scarcity in summer has become number one problem of people living in this township. Issues of 100 percent recovery of water charges bills and augmentation measures for water supply need to be addressed on top priority basis.
