WFP distributes 2,500 tons of pulses to Afghanistan

KABUL (Khaama Press): The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that, with support from the European Union, Germany, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, it distributed 2,500 tons of pulses across Afghanistan last year.

The WFP stated on Monday, February 10, on X that legumes are a vital source of protein, nutrients, iron, minerals, and B vitamins. This assistance has helped 700,000 people across the country receive food support.

The report also highlights that it is estimated nearly 15 million people will face a humanitarian crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity in Afghanistan this winter.

The WFP has initiated food distribution to remote areas, where access is cut off due to snow and freezing conditions, to provide aid to those affected by the harsh winter.

However, the World Food Programme has warned that severe financial constraints have limited its operations in Afghanistan. Over three-quarters of the population is unable to afford a nutritious diet that meets their needs and prevents malnutrition.

As winter continues, the humanitarian crisis deepens with neighboring countries, such as Pakistan and Iran, forcibly deporting Afghan refugees. This forced displacement exacerbates the dire conditions, leaving refugees without shelter or food in already strained communities.

The international community must address the worsening crisis by providing sustained aid and pressuring neighboring countries to halt forced deportations, ensuring the survival of vulnerable populations amid harsh winters and economic instability.
