It already has allowed Android users to back up their data over Google Drive but it is not yet password protected. Though the current system of backing up data is secure but some people may not be satisfied with it. Therefore, the new feature will provide an additional security layer to protect the backup data.
It is not clear when the feature will be rolled out to all WhatsApp users and currently it is expected to be available for Android users only. However, it is not sure whether the iOS users will be given the backup encryption option or not.
